A Different Drummer by William Melvin Kelley was written in 1962 and published in 1964. The book is under the category of historical fiction, classics, race, diversity, USA and real life struggles. A Different Drummer is set in a small southern town with white settlers and their slaves. Specifically the summary surrounding “A Different Drummer” is the Willson’s, a former family who owned various slaves. Their latest decision David Willson, has sold a piece of plantation to his servant, Tucker Caliban, the known “rebel” slave. William Melvin Kelley’s book told a very powerful story about what people go through especially the oppression of African Americans, throughout the book we see how they are collectively judged by their skin colour. I overall give “A Different Drummer” a total of 4.5 stars.
