“Our American Friend” by Anna Pitoniak is under the category of historical fiction, mystery, suspense, thriller, spy and politics. The story starts with Lara arriving to Moscow during the rise of the Cold war in 1974 in Paris. Lara’s story line involves ups and downs within discovering the Soviet Union and many secrets. Everyone thinks Laura is a typical trophy wife of president Henry Caine until Sophie a curious White House correspondent is reached out by Lara to write a biography about her. During this Biography Sophie finds many leads, secrets and theories of the not so “secret” life of Laura Caine. I read this novel during a reading slump and finished in 2 days on a road trip. I really loved how Anna wrote this novel and how I was constantly guessing what’s real and what’s a lie. Overall I would give “Our American Friend” a total of 5 stars.
